The Scraper Factory - I got the key to a little 200 square foot corner of a warehouse that the Mack Road Partnership is sharing with me. I got the front half of my mobile repair rig in the form of a Surly Long Haul Trucker thanks to my awesome wife Katie Stonebraker and Zach Waddle over at the Bicycle Business. I became a Kohl's Buckle Up to Grow Up Helmet Safety Center meaning that all the youths that take advantage of my mobile repair service, cycling safety activities, and Savage Sprints races will get a free helmet. The helmets are provided by the UC Davis Trauma Prevention Program. I'm also working on getting a steady supply of unwanted and abandoned bicycles through various resources.
The High School Mountain Bike League - If you haven't heard, high school mountain bike racing is now a club sport and is spreading like wildfire from coast to coast. Today I met with the principal and athletic director at Grant Union High School, my old drum corps buddy Harley White Jr., and the NorCal High School Cycling League Program Director Robert Ramirez. Harley and I are taking steps to become certified league coaches and all involved appear to highly motivated to join the movement. With a little bit of love and a whole lotta elbow grease we will be growing a new urban bicycling culture from Mack Road in the south to Grand Avenue in the north.
The Sacramento Velodrome - The unavoidable is happening now that I'm spending more time in the community and that is that I get introduced as the guy that's trying to build a velodrome in Sacramento. In 2011 I founded, filed, and formed the Sacramento Valley Velodrome Association. In July of 2014 I resigned my position as I was not getting the support I needed to continue and felt that the board was not interested in realizing my original mission. I am still very interested in building a velodrome in Sacramento that is accessible to and serves our urban youth.
Lastly, people are messaging me and asking how they can help and quite frankly what I need is cash. I'm happy to talk about sponsorship opportunities with brands that align with my mission. I have been bootstrapping this project entirely myself since 2010 when I financed, built, and promoted the Savage Sprints at Hot Italian. Five years is a longtime between paychecks...
